Things To Do Before You Go Overseas
So you are about to set of on your holiday. The day of departure is quickly approaching.
Below is a compiled list of things to do before you travel. The last thing you want is to worry about something your forgot to take care of before you left.
Insurance
You never know what will happen, let hope nothing every does. But just in case you are walking down the street, sneeze and startle an elephant that then stomps on a $500,000 car then runs out onto the street causing a 20 car pile up. You want to at the every least have the public liability covered.
If you will be traveling a couple of times a year at up to 60 days at a time, then take a look at covermore.
Disconnect or Reduce.
You are going to be out of the country for an extended period of time. Why pay for something you are not using?
The Fridge
Why keep an empty cupboard cool? This is the perfect opportunity to defrost the freezer at the same time.
The Car
Anytime you will not be using your car for more then 2 weeks it is a good idea to disconnect the battery.
Save your family and friends headaches of asking them to just start it up and let it run for a while. Just disconnect it.
This is also a good time to top up the air in the tires and fill up the tank as this is the last thing you will feel like doing when you return form your relaxing holiday.
The Internet.
If you will be away for over a month, consider disconnecting. If you are on an Unlimited or high tier plan consider dropping down to the lowest offering wile you are away. You will not be using it so why pay for it?
Banking
Let the bank know you are heading overseas. Last thing you want is your credit card being denied and not having any money on your holiday.
Bills.
Make sure they are all paid for before you do. You do not want to come home to a second notice, third notice, disconnection notice.
If your utility bill has not come yet just schedule a payment for the same amount plus 30% as the last bill. You will get a credit if you over pay. No need to worry about this on your holiday.
Memory Cards and Storage
Format them, make sure you have free space. You do not want to be on your vacation go to take a picture only to get a “memory card full” error.
You then realize the memory card is full with your only copy of your brothers wedding and you have nowhere to move it to.
If bringing a laptop also make sure you have enough free space available.
Backups
OK so you are insured great. If you camera is stolen it will be replaced. What about the pictures you take? Make sure you have a solid backup solution in place before setting off on vacation.
Mobile Phone
If taking pictures on your mobile phone at the very least set it to automatically backup to Google.
If using video camera and moving the footage to a laptop make sure you have a cloud back up service such as backbaze active before you leave.
Food
Perishables
Make sure you consume or discard any perishable foods you may have in your house.
That Avocado in the corner of you cupboard, that piece of ginger sitting on top of the fridge, the bowl of fruit in the living room. Make sure its gone. You do not want to come home a a moldy green fur.
Non Perishable Food
Go shopping and buy a couple of non perishable foods. This
is for when you return, as you never know what situation you will be coming home to. What is there is a rain storm or you loose your ATM card? Your mind can be at ease at least you have a meal you can rely on waiting for you at home.
