The Library Lawn
The lawn is a very popular place for local city workers as well as student to have lunch. Originally the are was closed off with a picket until 1939 when the area was opened up.

It is not uncommon to walk past on the weekend and see many gathered on the lawn protesting.
Anti war, pro same sex marriage are just a couple of the most recent gatherings.
Bit of History
The Library open in 1856, with a collection of 3,800 books. It was architect by a local Melbournian who also built the Melbourne Town Hall, and the Royal Exhibition Building.
It also was home to the the State’s Gallery until it moved to St Kilda road in the 1960 and the Museum until it relocated to the Carlton Garden’s in the 1990s.
