GoPro Hero 4 Silver Review. In the beginning I used just any old camera I had lying around. As I started to get more serious I needed something more capable. When I travel I am a minimalist, only the bare essentials come along for my journey.
More recently the Gopro Hero 7 Black is the go to camera.
Lugging around a big SLR camera with interchangeable lenses etc is just not my style.
When I consider a travel camera its size MUST be small and durable.
After 4 generations of refinement and improvements I decided to finally give the GoPro Hero 4 a test run. Deciding between the Black and Silver edition for me was a no brainier.
Black or Silver Edition
Let me see a camera with a view finder so I can see what I am shooting or a camera without. With view finder please.
The Resolution
This is a pretty powerful camera with its ability to shoot video in 4K, that’s 4 x Full HD.
How Long Can It Film For?
It depends of course what resolution, what frame rate. The battery seems to hold up for around 1 hours of recording or 2 hours of time lapse.
The App
Use a GoPro remote or do it for free with your mobile phone. All the setting available on the camera are now available via the mobile app. Remote view finder is viewable via the app
The Memory Cards
Since the GoPro Hero 3 Black Plus the GoPro has the ability to capture video in 4K.
If you plan on shooting in 4K you will need a decent memory card.
If you only plan on shooting in HD you may be able to get away with your old SD card.
The Size
It is 50% smaller and 40% lighter comparing to other versions of the GoPro HERO4 camera
The Waterproof Case
Included in the box is the 40m waterproof enclosure. Perfect for underwater photography, scuba diving etc
The Multitude of Accessories
With GoPro being on the market since 2002 and its popularity finding an accessory has never been easier.
There are hundreds of wired and wonderful accessories available most of them aftermarket.
Some of the accessories I have purchased since the camera are, Head-mount, Glass suction cap mount, silicon case, UV filters, extra batteries, Powered underwater enclosure with USB cable for endless recording, angle changing brackets just to name a few.
If there is something external your GoPro is lacking some accessories is not far away.
Well Recognized Format
Import your videos from a Mac, PC or Linux.
You now even have the ability to backup the SD card on the go using the WD My passport Hard Disk.
USB Standards Transfer Cable
Uses a standard Mini USB cable for both charging and data transfer. This mean they are cheap and plentiful no more over paying for a proprietary cable.
Best Moments Tag
Has a button that lets you mark up a video or photo of interest. Later when inside GoPro studio or the App you can find your moment easier.
Burst Mode
Capture an array of pictures in close succession
Slow Motion
Capture a video in 240 Frames per second then assemble it into a silky smooth slow motion video.
Time Lapse Video Mode
In previous models time lapse was created by stitching together a video from still pictures. With the GoPro Hero 4 it now has the ability to create a video right in the camera without any post processing
Night Lapse Mode
Again with previous models doing a night lapse scene was not so easy. A couple of test recording had to be done and adjust the exposure times. Now the GoPro is able to adjust the settings making it dead simple.
However if you want the finder grade controls you can always just use the Time Lapse setting and adjust all the setting manually.
Touch Screen
Unlike the Black edition the Silver edition has a view finder / touchscreen so you can see what you are recording.
External Microphone
Hooking up an external microphone is possible via the Micro USB connector
Interfaces
- Micro USB
- HDMI
- SD Card
