I do not even think a general everyday laundry service exists in Australia.
Even if it did it would be prohibitively expensive.
However in Thailand this is not the case. Getting your clothes washed for you is reasonably priced. ฿20-฿40 Bhat per kilogram approx $1.
Places such as Kanchanaburi offer to do it for ฿20. While in Bangkok it could be hard to find it for under ฿100
Most of the time a hotel will try and overcharge you.
Generally if the service is listed per item it is a good sign they are trying to rip you off.
Best thing to do is to go for a walk up and down a couple of streets in proximity to the hotel.
Most of the time you can find a laundry shop very close by.
Most of the time this is where the hotel would have sent your dirty clothes off to for cleaning anyway and marked up the price.
However there are some areas where I have had great difficulty finding a laundry. One such are is Pratunam Bangkok. Last time I ended up buying new shirts and underwear because the cost of the hotel provided laundry service was so high.
฿40 Bhat to wash ฿100 Bhat to buy new. I did end up finding two but one was closed and the other one the girl had gone home for two days.
